More than 40 locals have joined Crossdressing Australia, and more than two in five of them signed up as crossdressers or trans, against more than a quarter nationally. Small crowd? Sure. That suits a local, discreet flirt just fine: a hookup down the road, a regular date in Broadbeach, naughty chat on a slow Tuesday night.
The coast was made for showing off. Surfers Paradise has the highest concentration of gay-friendly bars and places to stay. Broadbeach is quieter and a touch more polished. And the whole strip sparkles after dark, so heels, a wig and a little black dress fit right in.

Strut It Where the Coast Dresses Up
After a proper night out, dressed to the nines? Hairy Mary's, on Surfers Avenue at Mermaid Beach just near Pacific Fair, opened in 2024 and runs drag nights. Star Observer called it the coast's only LGBTQIA+ venue in June 2026. Turn up glammed to the eyeballs: at a drag night, that's the whole point.
June is party month. In 2026 Gold Coast Pride ran more than 20 events, and Fair Day moved to HOTA, the Home of the Arts in Bundall, with a Pride March, a drag pageant and a pet parade. SkyPride took drag and DJs up SkyPoint in Surfers the same day. Pencil in next June and start planning the outfit now.
Rather ease in by daylight? The Gold Coast Pride Collective holds a monthly Trans and Non-Binary Picnic at Cascade Gardens in Broadbeach, and the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health runs its Transcendence support group on the coast. Meet by the Beach, Then Head for the Hills
First meets go somewhere public, with a view and an easy exit. Four that work on the coast:
- HOTA, Bundall. Wander the gallery, then grab a coffee at the café. The art gives you something to talk about while the butterflies settle.
- Cascade Gardens, Broadbeach. Shady paths, water features and a quiet bench to sit and size each other up.
- The Broadbeach café strip. A long lunch that can wrap up after one flat white or roll on into cocktails.
- The beachfront at dusk. Sand underfoot, heels in hand and the Surfers towers lighting up behind you.
The G:link light rail runs along the coast through Surfers and Broadbeach, and Translink fares are 50c, so leave the car at home. If it clicks, the hinterland is right there: Tamborine and Springbrook make a cheeky weekend away for two, and Byron Bay is in reach to the south. First time out dressed?
