For first-timers
Crossdressing in Australia: A Guide to Getting Started
Your first frock, your sizes, your nerve and your people, all sorted.
Start Small, Start Tonight
Start crossdressing in Australia the easy way: at home, with one piece that gives you a thrill. Learn your women's sizes, shop online where returns are simple, and build your nerve in private before your first night out. When you want company, social clubs, Pride nights and crossdresser dating put you in a room, or a chat, with people who get it.
Crossdressing just means wearing clothes usually tied to another gender. People do it at every age, in every line of work and every walk of life, straight, gay and everything in between. This guide does the practical stuff first, then the social side, because dressing up is a lot more fun when you're not doing it alone.
What It Is, and What It Isn't
Crossdressing is expression. For some it's how they switch off after a long week. For others it's tied up with identity, creativity or sex. There's no single reason, and no reason beats another.
It isn't the same as being trans. Some crossdressers are trans women; others are blokes who are perfectly happy being blokes and just enjoy the clothes. It doesn't decide who you fancy, either. Straight men dress, gay men dress, women do it too, and so do people right across the spectrum. If the labels get confusing, our crossdressing terms guide sorts them out.
Attitudes here have shifted a long way in twenty years. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have visible scenes, and online, someone in a country town can find their people without moving to a capital.

Find Your Look, Then Flaunt It
Start with what you've been eyeing: a slip dress, office wear, satin, lace or lingerie. You don't need the whole look on day one. A single item that makes your pulse race is enough, and the wardrobe grows from there.
Crack your sizes
Women's sizes run on a different system, so your usual size won't translate. Measure your chest, waist and hips and shop by each brand's own size chart. If buying in person feels too exposed at first, order online from shops with easy returns, and read the returns policy before you hit buy.
Shoes, lippy and wigs
Shoes are the hardest thing to find in bigger sizes, so hunt down stores that stock women's styles in extended sizes, and start with a low block heel before you graduate to stilettos. For your face, foundation, concealer and a good lippy do the heavy lifting for the least fuss. A synthetic wig is a smart first buy: affordable and easy to look after. Our clothes and shoes guide and makeup tips take it step by step.
Build Your Nerve, Step by Step
- Dress at home first. Try outfits, practise the makeup and get used to the person in the mirror. Months or even years of private dressing is completely normal, and there's no deadline.
- Take photos. Even if nobody else ever sees them, they show you what works and how far you've come.
- Pick a first outing where dressing up is the point. A drag night at a queer venue, or Pride: Midsumma takes over Melbourne in January and February, and Mardi Gras runs in Sydney through February and March. Our first date en femme guide lists venues city by city.
- Expect the fear to shrink. The reactions you dread rarely turn up, and strangers are usually too busy with their own night to clock your heels. When someone is rude, the confidence you've built makes it easier to shrug off.
Find Your People
Dressing solo is fine, but company adds what a mirror can't: a second opinion, mates, practical tips and, if you want them, dates.
In person, Australia's crossdresser clubs go back a long way. Seahorse Victoria formed in 1975 and turned 50 in 2025, and you talk to the club before joining, which protects everyone's privacy. The Seahorse Society of NSW has been going since 1971 and holds social nights in Sydney, and partners can come along. In Perth, TransFolk of WA runs peer groups and social drop-ins. Our support groups guide lists more, state by state, and it's worth checking a group's current calendar before you turn up.
Dating's the other way in. On a crossdresser dating site you never have to wonder whether mentioning the frock will kill the conversation, because the site is built around it. More than 800 members of Crossdressing Australia signed up as crossdressers or trans. Browse crossdressers near you and take your time getting to know someone before you meet.
Got a partner? Telling them can feel like a huge conversation. Some partners are on board straight away; others need time. Frame it as something you're sharing because you trust them, not a confession. Our guide for couples, my husband crossdresses, is written for both of you.
Wear It Your Way
Crossdressing isn't a phase to grow out of, a problem to fix or a secret you owe anyone. It's yours. Trying on your first frock tonight, or dressing for years and finally wanting company? Either way, the only rule is that you do it on your terms. There's more help in our guides for crossdressers and admirers.

Is crossdressing legal in Australia?
Yes. No Australian law stops you dressing en femme, at home or out on the town, and since 2013 federal law has protected gender identity, including how you look, from discrimination in areas like goods and services.
What should I buy first?
One piece you genuinely want to wear, in the right size. Lingerie, a simple dress or a skirt are easy first buys, and shopping online with easy returns takes the pressure off while you learn your sizes.
Does crossdressing mean I'm gay or trans?
No. Crossdressing says nothing fixed about who you fancy or your gender identity. Straight men dress, and so do men who are perfectly comfortable with the gender they were born with.
How do I meet other crossdressers in Australia?
Social clubs such as Seahorse Victoria and the Seahorse Society of NSW meet in person, every capital city has a Pride festival, and a crossdresser dating site lets you chat with people near you before you meet.
